Preparing for Christmas: The Advent Jesse Tree
This class was held on Saturday, July 8, 2017, 9:00am-11:30am in the Ministry Room. We suggested ways to incorporate the Gospel into family Christmas activites by using the Advent Jesse Tree. Advent Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, and are used to help tell the story of God's salvation plan from creation to the coming of the Messiah. The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David (Isaiah 11:1-4).
Our Jesse Tree devotions focused on the promises of God. We began by reading the Bible story for the day of Advent, then discussing questions we could ask children. Then we sang a hymn and made an ornament. We did this four times, making ornaments for the four Sundays of Advent in 2017: a rainbow, a cluster of grapes, a cross and an angel. Each day through advent (or on the four Sundays of advent) a special ornament representing a biblical account is hung on the tree.
